Ask HN: How come HN folks are so well-versed in social sciences and humanities?

Maybe my world is just small, but I’m consistently surprised at how many folks at HN are so well-versed at both technology and social sciences & humanities. Was it your academic background / career path? Or was it just out of interest? What kind of things (books, magazines, forums, etc) helped you to become so knowledgeable and/or engaged in these world/cultural issues? I myself only recently got interested in these fields (my background is in the sciences) so I would love to know what everyone’s “stories” are. 🙂
