Ask HN: How does one go about bringing a hardware product to market

How does one go from an idea to a sellable product? I have various ideas, not especially “high tech” more assembling of off the shelf components to create novel products that I think may be useful (I have a need for these myself). So I could build a prototype myself (despite being a software person). After that what? How do you find out about manufacturing costs and options? Marketing is another side, but I have an idea about that. Are there any good guides out there?
